Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club Mixed Open
Popular win by the Club President. Stef and Mira Brochocki won the Mixed Open held at Shanklin and Sandown on a very hot Sunday. In a Greensome format, they scored 41 points and were followed home by Gary Meszynski and Chris Gould (38 points) and Tony Wray and Brenda Connery (37 points). There was a good field with couples from all Island Golf Clubs as well as several clubs in Hampshire. Stef thanked all those who had helped to make the event so successful and praised his wife's golf which had carried the day."
Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club held a very successful AM-AM in brilliant weather at the week-end and a record field of 160 players in teams of 4 attempted to knock last year's winners off the podium. They failed, as Ashley Curzon, Alan Evans, Les Means and Stuart Bennett won again with a score of 124 points. Second, on count-back, were Adam and James Summers,Ashley Lawrence and Stuart Harris who just edged out Mark King of Level 42 fame with his team of Clive Robinson,Steve Burke and Tyler Roberts, both teams scoring 120 points.
Barclays sponsored the event and Area Manager Graham Cooper presented the prizes. He said that Barclays were delighted to continue building on their support for Island sports.
Club Captain Adrian Nobbs thanked Paul Knight and his greens staff, the caterers and nearest the pin sponsors and all the others who had helped to make the event so successful. Its reputation continued to grow and competitors from 17 different clubs took part. Over £100 pounds was raised from the putting competition for the Captain's charity, the IOW Hospice.

The straightest drive was won by Alan Evans and nearest the pin winners were Dave Vale, Stef Brochocki, Richard Hendrick (Bognor), Les Means and Malcolm Cake (Cams Hall).

CONGRATULATIONS
On Friday, 22nd.February 2008 Mark Bell was honoured by the Isle of Wight Sports and Recreation Council by winning the Senior Mens section for recognition of his golfing achievements. A title well deserved due to his commitment to the sport. Aged only 20 Mark is easily the best Island Golfer and his example and general demeanour have been an inspiration to his fellow members, particularly the Clubs younger golfers.

To assist with the protection of the course, the use of trolleys and buggys on the course is now prohibited with immediate effect.
This situation will be monitored on a weekly basis and we hope to be able to restore the use of trolleys and buggys as soon as the weather and the ground conditions improve.

The club has agreed a reciprocal arrangement with Henley Golf Club on payment of a guest rate of £20.
Henley Golf Course like our own was originally designed by Braid.

Out on the Course in 2007
Although the growing and cutting season started with a very dry April, by the end of which the course was already starting to turn almost as much brown as green, the cool and wet May to mid August and the warm and dry September to November ensured that 2007 was a very busy maintenance and presentation season for our Greens’ Staff. The fuel bills went through the roof as the grass grew and grew, and Paul Knight and his team worked tirelessly to give us the beautifully presented and testing course we have enjoyed all year.
The Greens’ Committee is very keen to ensure the long-term sustainability of the course and so, at the beginning of the season, the club commissioned a Woodland Management Plan from the well respected firm of John Nicholson Associates. The aims and objectives are to:
· Maintain and enhance the quality of the course.
· Maintain and enhance the long-term landscape value of the course.
· Enhance the value of the course for wildlife.
· Ensure the safety of members, guests and staff.
· Encourage long-term vision and continuity of management policy.
During the autumn the Greens’ Committee has been studying the Plan and discussing how best to proceed. The cost of contracting the full work which the club considers desirable takes the “one big job” approach out of the equation at this time. However, the club is keen to take the plans forward, and it has therefore been decided to start work in house, with a single tree surgeon contracted on a daily basis when required, during the 2007/08 winter. We all see the results of the first area where work has been undertaken as soon as we step on to the first tee. The woodland edges are now much more clearly defined, thinning has been undertaken to encourage development of natural regeneration of tree species and ground flora and prevent the further ingress of gorse, and much more light and air is available to the fourth tee.
It is hoped that the Greens’ Staff will be able to continue with the woodland management plan as agreed by the Greens’ Committee on a hole-by-hole basis. So far the committee has detailed the desirable work on the first, second and third holes for the 2007/2008 winter. The Greens’ Staff of seven is now at full strength after having had almost two years running under strength, and Paul Knight is optimistic that progress is possible by spring without compromising either the everyday maintenance of our course or the already planned major works. Paul and the Greens’ Committee are keen to see what can be undertaken in house, but both are firm that priority will always be given to normal and essential course maintenance, the club’s published major works’ programme, and the welfare and breeding of wildlife. However, if we are fortunate with the winter weather, by spring it is hoped that we will see much woodland improvement on our first
few holes. The benefits that will flow from the work include the reduction of the severe threat to the heather on the course from the continued ingress of gorse which is so damaging to heathland and a return to view of some of the historic and strategic features of the course, such as ditches and bunds, which have been compromised by the ingress of trees and gorse.

"Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club held their last major club match on Saturday when Club Captain Peter Bushby led his team of Over 50s to a narrow defeat by Club Professional Peter Hammond's team of Under 50s. Forty pairs of young and old locked horns in a better-ball aggregate stableford with most matches being won or lost by only a couple of points. The best pair on the day was the ancient pairing of Roy Truman and Tony Williams who beat Dennis Hoyle and David Emery on count-back, with 44 points each.Four of the best six pairs were from the Over 50s and four of the worst six scores were also from the Oldies. Perhaps food for thought for both a statistician and an actuary.
After the match both teams enjoyed a good dinner and the Captain welcomed a lot of new members who had signed up to play and so made new friends and contacts."

"Vale Learns a Lesson! One of Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club's best golfers, Dave Vale felt his golf swing needed attention. So the 5 handicapper asked the Club's Professional, Peter Hammond to take a look.The cost of the lesson was easily recouped over the last fortnight as Dave won the monthly stableford and then followed this up last Saturday in the monthly medal with a gross 69 (against par of 70) to produce a winning net score of 64.This beat Simon Guy's net 66 and Vincent Eccott's net 67. The winner,having dropped early shots, then proceeded to make 5 birdies in a row from the 12th hole.His handicap is now 4!.

Warren Cup 2007
This knock-out competition for players with handicaps of 14 and above was won by Andy Steel(playing off 14) in a fiercely fought match against Frank Brown (22). It was only when Andy won the 16th and 17th that he drew clear to win 2/1.

McClelland Father and Son Trophy 2007
Tony Williams and his son Shaun retained this trophy when they just managed to beat Peter and George Hill on the 18th green. In a close match which was all square at the turn, there was never more than 1 hole between the two families. Both fathers were playing off 5 and were ably supported by their sons. But it is the Williams pere et fils who hang on to the hardware.

The Baxter Bowl 2007
The Seniors singles knock-out winner was Chris Reed who beat Alex Messing on the last hole. This is the 5th year since this beautiful bowl was presented to Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club by Peter Baxter. It is the second time Chris has won this competition and was the first to acknowledge that Alex played some excellent golf and was unlucky to find an unplayable lie behind the 18th green.

Junior Greenjackets Final
Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club’s juniors made their third appearance in four years in the finals of the Greenjackets County Scratch Junior Competition for Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands at Hockley Golf Club on Tuesday. Having beaten Freshwater Bay, Southwood and Liphook to reach the final stage, the team of James Mitchell (Junior Captain), Tristan Eccott and Dominic Norris came up against a strong team from the Hampshire Club in the semi-finals and although they played well, were unable to avert a 2.5-0.5 defeat. The other semi-final saw a very talented Royal Jersey team beat Lee-on-the-Solent and eventually go on to beat the Hampshire and become the 2007 champions with Shanklin and Sandown finishing a creditable 4th.
The continued strength of Shanklin and Sandown’s Junior Section owes much to the efforts of Club Professional Peter Hammond and dedication of Junior Organiser Jonathan West. The team was supported by about 20 club members, parents and friends.
Shanklin and Sandown Club Championship 2007
Over 80 members competed in the annual Club Championship and after rounds of 72 and 66 Chris Reed won by an impressive margin of 7 shots. With Mark Bell away at Wentworth the field was wide open but young Reed played outstanding golf to take the title. His long birdie putt on the 18th at the end of the second day typified the control he exhibited throughout. His playing partners, Steve Hawkswell who finished 2nd and Dave Vale (4th), were generous in their praise for the new champion. The Club's President, Stef Brochocki, with scores of 75 and 72 came a creditable third with Tony Williams and last year's winner Tom Robinson both 4 shots back. But the day belonged to Chris Reed who thanked Peter Hammond for his guidance over the years and to his parents who were, as usual, on hand to support him.
With the excellence of his scores, Reed also won the Roger Mathews Salver, a handicap competition but only beating Stef Brochocki by one shot with Simon Best, who had a nett 65 on day one, coming third.
And if that was not enough Chris Reed won the Melville Hall Cup on the Sunday, his nett 64 just ahead of the field with Andy Steel beating Stuart Bancroft on countback, both on 65.
In spite of an interruption of 2 hours caused by a thunderstorm the members enjoyed the course at its best and thanks were offered to Paul Kight and his green-keepers team.
A Glorious Month
In the space of 28 days, 19 year old Mark Bell of Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club on the Isle of Wight won the Island Championship title, broke his club course record and won the silver medal at the Island Games in Rhodes.
Mark, whose golfing progress has been supervised by Shanklin's professional Peter Hammond over the last decade, plays off plus one. In early June he won the IOW Championship, held at Freshwater Bay Golf Club, beating Matt Barnicoat in the final by 4 and 3. A fortnight later, playing in the monthly medal at Shanklin and Sandown., Mark shot a 62 to beat Steve Hawkswell 's 2005 record by one. To underline his consistency he shot 65 two days later. He then flew to the Island of Rhodes as part of a four-man team from the Isle of Wight to participate in the Island Games where he won the silver medal. After two practice rounds in scorching heat, he had rounds of 72, 74. 78 and 67 against par of 74. His 7 under final round was not quite enough to catch the winner, William Haddrell (plus 3) from Bermuda.
Mark took the silver medal comfortably and we can expect further success from this young man.
Marks latest exploit was his participation in the Tillman Trophy, a national mens ranking competition at Wentworth over four rounds. Mark finished a creditable 28th. from a starting field of 120.

SHANKLIN & SANDOWN GOLF CLUB PRO-AM TOURNAMENT

Ablett is champion
Lee-on-the-Solent’s James Ablett shot an impressive seven-under-par total of 133 to win the Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club Pro-Am.
The Tournament, which was sponsored by Island Waste, is established as the Isle of Wight’s premier golfing event and this year celebrated its 26th anniversary.
Ablett’s rounds of 68 and 65 mean that he is an amazing 46 under par for his last twelve competitive rounds, all of which have been sub-par.
In addition to winning the Shanklin & Sandown title Ablett also becomes the very first ‘Sandham Office Services PGA Champion of the Isle of Wight’, an award sponsored by Sandham Office Services that will be presented annually to the leading Professional in the Shanklin & Sandown GC Pro-Am.
Second place went to Hampshire PGA Captain Kevin Saunders, who had led at the half-way stage after an opening round of 66. Wellow’s David Porter was third and Lee-on-the-Solent’s former Ryder Cup player Steve Richardson was fourth.
A total of 42 teams took part in the Pro-Am, which was won by Paulton’s Mark Williamson and ‘The Retrogliders’ team of Mark King, Gary Royston and Clive Robinson. They shot a seventeen-under-par score of 123 to take victory by three shots from Kevin Saunders and his ‘Crash, Bang, Wallop’ team of Adam Summers, Stuart Harris and James London. David Porter’s ‘Robert Gray Design’ team of Dave Vale, Lynsey Burden and Robert Gray were third with Steve Richardson, Sue Pick, David Cargill and Chris Reed Snr (The B’s Knees) in fourth.
Special prizes were won by Ian Miller, Dave Bartlett, Dave Vale, Steve Alexander, Gary Moody, Alison Hooper and Chris Iona.
